UFC Fighter Jon Jones Seeks Treatment for Cocaine Use

Substance misuse in sports is nothing new and something that officials have become stricter about in recent years. Performance-enhancing drugs and illegal substances have been criticized for giving players unfair advantages, but they are also detrimental to the player’s overall health. Random drug testing has been implemented throughout sports at all levels from high school through professional in an effort to keep players safer. There are numerous substances which are banned.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is the most recent athlete to land in the spotlight for failing a drug test. He tested positive for benzolyecgonine, which is a metabolite of cocaine and a banned substance during competition. However, because he was not in competition at the time of the test, and he passed the next drug test taken, it did not impact his eligibility to fight. But Jones decided that it was time to address the issue and tackle it head on by entering into a drug and alcohol treatment program for cocaine rehab in conjunction with other addiction treatments.

Setting a Positive Example

Jones is setting a positive example for athletes and others who may be struggling with substance misuse by admitting that he has a problem and seeking help. Athletes often turn to drugs as a way to boost their performance. They want to be stronger and faster. They want to be able to hit harder and have more endurance. With so much focus on competition and being the best, they do what they feel they have to in order to stand out and be recognized.

However, these substances take a toll on their body and mind. What started out as occasional use becomes more frequent. Eventually it can spiral into addiction and have a greater impact on their life. They risk throwing their career away and having their reputation tarnished or questioned. Were their achievements the result of hard work and talent, or aided by the substances they were taking?

As officials crack down and put stricter rules in place, it sends the message that substance misuse will not be tolerated. If athletes do test positive for drug use, they face hefty fines and suspension from playing. There is also scrutiny from the public and they don’t want to let their fans and supporters down. This can serve as motivation for players to abstain from using banned substances.

Overcoming Addiction

By entering a drug and alcohol rehab facility, Jones is making his health and wellbeing a priority. He is not the first, nor will he be the last, athlete to step back and take the time to get the help they need. By overcoming addiction, he can put his focus back on his career, his family, and his life without having to worry about the risks of drug use.
