Your Job as a Detox Specialist

Every experience with addiction, rehab, and recovery are different. This means that everyone working in the field of addiction needs to be versatile and flexible when dealing with addiction and those who suffer from it. No occupation needs more flexibility and versatility than that of the detox specialist. Essentially, a detox specialist works with patients through the detox process and helps them prepare for the journey of recovery ahead. However, it’s more than just helping someone through a medical process; in fact, a detox specialist’s job starts long before the detox procedure even takes place.

A detox professional’s job begins when a patient is first admitted to the detox or rehabilitation facility. From there, a detox specialist takes over. They will evaluate and interview a patient to try and figure out if they need a detox, and if so, how to proceed with one. Usually in this stage, a detox specialist will draw out plans and care programs to help the individual through detox. This can involve necessary medications and types of detox that will actually be needed. At that point, the patient will likely begin to undergo the actually process of detoxing from their specific drug.

During the detox, the patient is supervised by medical professionals and often by the detox specialist themselves. This stage is critical, as withdrawing from a drug can often be an extremely dangerous procedure. Painful and sometimes dangerous side effects can be a normal part of a detox, so it’s up to the detox specialist to help the patient deal with and overcome them. After the detox, the specialist might work out a treatment plan with other medical professionals to help insure the patient can proceed unhindered into the recovery process. When done correctly, the negative side effects of withdrawal can be mitigated, allowing the patient to enjoy the rewarding experience of recovery unhindered by drug addiction or cravings.

Detox is just the first step of many in the journey of recovery. As a detox specialist, you’re the most important part of this step, as you allow the patient to overcome their addiction and move on with their life in rehab and beyond. It’s a tough job, but with the right experience and education, it’s a job that can be as enjoyable as it is rewarding. Helping people move through what will undoubtedly be one of the most difficult times of their life can be tough, but a good detox sets the stage for a great recovery.
