Alcohol & Energy Drinks: A Recipe for Disaster?

Mixing alcohol and energy drinks may seem like a good idea at the time, but it can actually have some dangerous effects. Some people think that that by combining the two, they get the best of both worlds by enjoying the relaxing effects of alcohol while staying more alert from the caffeine in the energy drink. Over the past several years, there were companies that created ready-to-drink combinations sold in stores. However, as more studies have been conducted on the effects, most of these products have been discontinued or the formulations have changed.

A Dangerous Combination

Alcohol is a depressant while caffeine is a stimulant. In general, the stimulating effect is felt more strongly. This can lead people to drink more because they continue to feel alert and more sober than they really are. However, the alcohol still affects their body. Their judgment, coordination, and reactions are still impaired. It just may not be as noticeable at first. People may engage in riskier behaviors because they think that they are less intoxicated than they really are. And with increased drinking, they run the risk of developing an addiction or other serious health issues.

In addition, the combination of caffeine and alcohol can have detrimental effects on the body. It can lead to increased heart rate, anxiety, aggression, and problems sleeping. As the effects wear off, it can make people feel more fatigued or stressed. Alcohol and energy drinks also contain a lot of sugar and empty calories which can result in unwanted weight gain and a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes if consumed frequently.

Reducing Risk

While ideally mixing alcohol and energy drinks should be avoided, if they are consumed, it should be done so sparingly. It is a good idea to alternate between alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated and reduce alcohol intake. Another good idea is to track how much you are drinking. Set limits for yourself and know when you should stop. It is recommended that men have no more than two drinks per day or 14 per week, and women have no more than one drink per day or seven per week to reduce their risk of alcohol addiction.

Before drinking, eat a decent meal so that your stomach is full. This will decrease the absorption rate of the alcohol and keep you from feeling the effects as quickly or strongly. Plan ahead to have a designated driver or a safe way to get home. Combining alcohol and energy drinks can make people feel more alert; therefore they may believe that they will be safer at driving since they feel less intoxicated. However, the alcohol has still impaired their judgment and reaction time making it dangerous to get behind the wheel.
