Drug and alcohol addiction treatment is a very personal journey; there is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Everyone’s situation is different. In order to maximize recovery efforts, clients must find a program that meets their needs and provides approaches that they can connect with. While many people are familiar with 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, there are also a variety of non 12-step programs. There is no solid proof that shows one is more effective than the other. It is important for clients to know their options and be able to choose which methods work best for their situation.
How do 12-step programs work?
These programs are very structured and guide clients through a 12-step process of recovery. It is generally rooted in the belief that a higher power is at work. Each client is supported by a sponsor who has completed the program and works with them along each step of the way. Weekly meetings are held where participants gather with others in the program and discuss their progress, successes, and challenges. They can learn strategies from one another about how to deal with certain situations. Everyone is at a different stage in their recovery, so there is a wealth of information, advice, and motivation to be shared.
How do non 12-step programs work?
These programs are more personalized than 12-step approaches and are not based on the belief of a higher power. Approaches are tailored to the needs of the client and strive to get to the root of the problem. Clients are empowered to make changes in their lives and find motivation that allows them to continue following these changes. Non 12-step programs are often more comprehensive and allow clients to decide which strategies work best for them.
Some non 12-step programs include SMART Recovery, cognitive behavioral therapy, and Stages of Changes. They provide group and one-on-one counseling and often incorporate holistic approaches for more comprehensive treatment.
Which should you choose?
Clients are encouraged to explore their options and see what different approaches offer. They may find a unique combination of strategies that works best for their situation. This could involve pulling techniques from various approaches rather than following a single, set path. Recovery is about finding the right fit for their needs and giving them the strategies and confidence to embrace change in their lives. Some clients stand behind a 12-step approach and it works very well for them. Others opt for an alternative method that is more individualized. And still more incorporate some aspects of the 12-step program and some aspects of other programs to build a treatment plan personalized for their care.
