The media is filled with stories of celebrities and even common folk who have relapsed in their recovery.   • Make it meaningful

In order to stay committed to your recovery, it needs to mean something to you. You shouldn’t be doing things because you think it’s what other people want or what will make them happy. Find personal connections and inspirations. Maybe it’s because you’re tired of the way substance use made you feel and you were unable to keep doing things you enjoyed. Maybe it’s because you realized you were passed up for a promotion that was within your reach because your work was suffering. Or maybe you see how much you’ve missed out on with your kids growing up. Have a purpose and keep it in your vision. Something that inspires you and reminds you of why you choose sobriety each day.

  • Keep it interesting

You may keep a stricter routine in early recovery, but as you become more confident and comfortable, expand your horizons. Try new activities that draw your interest. You may discover that you’re great at painting or playing guitar. If it’s yoga or meditation that you find solace in, change up where you practice them. The more you continue doing these activities the more ingrained they will become. The next time you’re at the airport and feeling stressed, you’ll be able to sink into a more peaceful state and keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed. Also, having a variety of tools for coping means more options and flexibility.

  • Stay accountable

In order to stick with your recovery, have a support network that will hold you accountable. People who will make you rethink your actions. If you’re headed in the wrong direction, they can help you get back on track and prevent you from slipping into a rut. You don’t have to announce your recovery to the world, but when those close to you are aware, they can be more supportive and encouraging. Trying to go it alone can add more stress and make you more susceptible to relapse. Plus, you don’t have that driving force of wanting to prove yourself and show you’ve changed.

  • Create new goals

Recovery can become boring when you lose sight of what you’re working toward. Becoming complacent can put you at risk of relapse. Set short- and long-term goals for yourself. As you reach new milestones, keep stretching yourself. Think about all of the possibility that your future holds and what you want to accomplish. Setting new goals can keep you motivated and it can be empowering to tick things off of your list and see how far you’ve come. Always give yourself something to be working toward.

  • Establish a safe and supportive environment

Life can be unpredictable and there are things that are out of your control. But you can choose where and how you spend your time, and who you choose to associate with. In making recovery a way of life, you may have to cut ties with people who are a negative influence. Those who aren’t supportive of your new lifestyle and who may trigger temptation. Surround yourself with people who are understanding and want to help you succeed. No matter what happens in life, you know you have this core you can depend on and a safe place to go.

Have patience. You will find what works best for you and slowly keep adapting as life changes. Before you know it, recovery will be a part of who you are, and staying on track becomes easier because of the life you’ve built around it.
