Lean (Purple Drank): What is This?

Purple Drank (Lean): About, Effects & Risks

There are many newer drugs and concoctions that have swept into homes in the past years. Some of them are homemade and can be very powerful and dangerous. Even adolescents are making these drinks out of ingredients they find such as soft drinks, prescription strength cough medications and hard fruit flavored candies. The drink which is made from these ingredients is called Lean or Purple Drank. This is a very strong narcotic based drug that often leads to serious health effects. The cough syrup that is used in the making of Lean is extremely dangerous because it has codeine in it. Promethazine is found in some cough syrups as well. That creates impaired motor functioning and sedation too.

Codeine is an opioid and it is used in many cough syrups and analgesics. When someone consumes larger doses of codeine, for non-medical reasons, the effects are often harmful. Since users drink Lean, they can’t really keep track of the amount of drug or codeine they have already consumed. Additionally, since the drink tastes like pop and candy, users will often drink even more, without taking into consideration the amount of codeine they are getting.

This is a newer drug, so there aren’t that many statistics on it. Additionally, being that the Lean ingredients are not illegal, it is tough to keep track of the abuse of it. With that being said, Purple Drank is talked about in the media, with Rob Kardashian, Justin Bieber, and Lil Wayne, using it. Since many tweens and some teens, look up to these famous celebrities, they also start believing that drinking Lean is cool and safe, but it isn’t.

What Are Some Side Effects of Lean?

There are some side effects to drinking Lean. These might get more severe after someone drinks even more of the Purple Drank. First-time users might notice blurry vision, dizziness, memory issues, nausea, constipation, dental health issues, urinary tract infections and weight gain. Those who have been drinking this for longer or take larger doses might have life threatening reactions, especially if they are taking other types of drugs as well. Some of the cases reported in relation to Lean have been surrounding coma or death. The death risk is much higher when someone is taking depressant harmful substances or sedation drugs.

Far too many people think Lean is very safe to drink because the ingredients are not illegal. However, it needs to be known, that this drink can cause death. Even the celebrities mentioned above are experiencing major health issues because of Purple Drank.
