The Future of Addiction: Porn

As Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s current controversy regarding hardcore porn starts to blow over, it’s important to take stock where the U.S. is right now when it comes to porn addiction. On September 11th, according to Daily Mail, Cruz liked a hardcore porn video on Twitter, much to the dismay of many of his Christian followers. It might be an indication that there could be a porn addiction epidemic in the U.S.

Cruz has public ally said that pornography is a public health crisis, and while he may have a point, it might be bigger than we expected. Even Cruz could be afflicted. The Telegraph, a United Kingdom paper, said that porn is a 21st century addiction that is rewiring our brains.

Ever since the foundations of the internet were laid, porn has been a big part of it. From the earliest peer-to-peer file sharing all the way until now, the porn industry has been a leader in development for the internet. The porn industry was one of the first to add visual and text additions to their sites and videos. Now, porn is a menace, but it’s the most dominant force on the internet.

The porn industry worldwide is worth around $15 billion. That’s a ridiculously high market, but this happens because porn makes up much of the internet. It turns out though, that porn might be causing physiological problems among young men. There are studies that show young men are starting to suffer from erectile dysfunction, and some researchers think it might be due to the abundance of porn and masturbation. This could lead to lasting problems on a personal and societal level.

Some researchers are claiming that porn is ruining young people in general. For example, showing them unrealistic expectations of what sex is like can ruin a person before they have sex for the first time. Also, there is a link between people having safe sex and the way sex is portrayed in porn. For example, people are more likely to use condoms if pornography actors are using condoms also

While Cruz might not necessarily be a porn addict, his controversial comments about pornography and masturbation are sure to ignite a debate about porn and addiction. It’s something that could be poisoning young souls for years to come. Should something be done about it?
