Rehab Information

Oxycontin is a strong central nervous system depressant designed to alleviate moderate to severe pain.  Oxycontin is the brand name of the time-release formula, Oxycodone. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1995 and introduced to the U.S. market in 1996. By 2001, it was the best-selling non-generic narcotic pain reliever in the U.S. An analysis of data from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration found that retail sales “jumped nearly six-fold between 1997 and 2005.″ This drug is primarily used to relieve moderate to severe pain. When taken as prescribed, it is usually safe. However, abuse can lead to physical and psychological dependence.

Effects of Abuse

Side effects associated with prolonged unsupervised use of Oxycontin are related to the user’s physical and mental health; symptoms include drowsiness, dizziness, itching, lightheadedness, nausea, sweating, vomiting, and other health issues. Like other prescription drugs, chronic usage can lead to the addict developing a tolerance and dependence upon the drug. The abuser will commonly increase their consumption of the drug to maintain the desired effect and battle the developing tolerance. Abuse of this drug can be fatal for an addict. Mixing it with alcohol, cocaine, benzodiazepines, and other medications can have severe adverse reactions including, but not limited to, heart failure, heart attack, respiratory distress, liver or kidney failure, and a number of other health-related problems.

Withdrawal Doesn’t Have to be Painful

At Chapters, we understand that most people are anxious about the idea of going through withdrawal and this keeps them using the drug. We recognize that withdrawal can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be.

Through the rehab program at Chapters, our process engages the most traditional and safe form of withdrawal from using, which is a drug-specific detox. Clients receive mild prescription medication under medical supervision that reduces the risk of seizure and eases withdrawal symptoms. These medications generally are prescribed in tapering amounts until the body is physically stabilized.
